The author set out for the Congo's eastern border with just a rucksack and a few thousand dollars hidden in his boots with the idea of recreating H M Stanley's famous expedition. This book tells of the author's journey and the story of Congo; as he made his way in an assortment of vessels including a motorbike and a dugout canoe.

Long Description

When Daily Telegraph correspondent Tim Butcher was sent to cover Africa in 2000 he quickly became obsessed with the idea of recreating H. M. Stanley's famous expedition - but travelling alone. Despite warnings that his plan was 'suicidal', Butcher set out for the Congo's eastern border with just a rucksack and a few thousand dollars hidden in his boots. Making his way in an assortment of vessels including a motorbike and a dugout canoe, helped along by a cast of characters from UN aid workers to a campaigning pygmy, he followed in the footsteps of the great Victorian adventurers. Butcher's journey was a remarkable feat, but the story of the Congo, told expertly and vividly in this book, is more remarkable still.

Long Description

Fans of Kingsley Holgate and his wild adventures, tackled fearlessly with his petite wife Gill and son Ross and a varying band of expedition members, will relish this new series of epic exploits. Always game to venture where many before him have feared to tread, Kingsley and his entourage have set out to honour those tough, courageous early explorers of the African continent. David Livingstone, Henry Morton Stanley, Frederick Courtney Selous, John Hanning Speke and others all faced starvation, fever and often death to open up Africa to the Western world. Like these brave and tenacious individuals, the Holgate party tackle mighty rivers such as the Nile, Congo, Rovuma and Rufiji, negotiating angry rapids, thrashing with crocodiles and startling territorial hippos. Circumnavigating Africa's greatest lakes – Niassa, Victoria and Tanganyika – they battle demonic high winds and water, and endure the blistering furnace of the desolate lava-bouldered Jade Sea's shores. These are tales of such daring, courage and endurance that it's impossible for readers to tire of the Kingsley family's high adventures.

Long Description

The author, no stranger to Africa with his titles, The scramble for Africa and The Boer War, nor to remarkable trees with his Meetings with Remarkable Trees and Remarkable Trees of the World, combines his two interests on safari in southern Africa in pursuit of remarkable trees. His particular quarry is the rare, the giant, the very old, the extraordinary, or the simply beautiful, or those trees imbued with significance, written about by the great explorers of the past, or associated with magic, folklore, or ritual. In an opening section he describes his journey and the extraordinary moments of drama and even danger, and those moments of triumph as he stands in awe before a tree, connected by some primitive, atavistic bond. It is those moments we share in the resulting photographs. The texts that accompany each image are as individual as his photographs, a beautifully crafted blend of botany and social history.

The is the first photographic field guide to be published about South Africa that covers a cross-section of the most prominent animals, plants, birds, insects and tracks and signs of the Bushveld.

Long Description

It includes a detailed natural history section for a greater understanding of the people, geology, habitats and ecology of the Waterberg. The history of the people is divided into two fascinating accounts, one on the indigenous people of the area and one personal account of the early settler history as told by Lex Rodger, a Waterberg resident of 90 years. This book negates the need to carry more than one guidebook when travelling to the Waterberg or any South African Bushveld region. In writing this comprehensive account Lee has availed himself to the kind services of many experts who have read and checked facts on their individual areas of expertise. Some of these include; Vincent Carruthers (amphibians), Louis du Preez (amphibian images), Jonathan Leeming (scorpions and spiders), Louis Liebenberg (tracking illustrations), Hendri Coetzee (birds), Paul van Gaalen (bird images), Harold Braak (reptiles), Johan Marais (reptile images) and Frits van Oudtshoorn (grasses).

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman travel down through Africa in a fascinating new biking adventure.

Long Description

After their fantastic trip round the world in 2004, fellow actors and bike fanatics Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman couldn't shake the travel bug. And after an inspirational UNICEF visit to Africa, they knew they had to go back and experience this extraordinary continent in more depth. And so they set off on their 15,000-mile journey with two new BMWs loaded up for the trip. Joining up with producer/directors Russ Malkin and David Alexanian and the Long Way Round team, their route took them from John O'Groats at the northernmost tip of Scotland to Cape Agulhas on the southernmost tip of South Africa. Riding through spectacular scenery, often in extreme temperatures, Ewan and Charley faced their hardest challenges yet. With their trademark humour and honesty they tell their story - the drama, the dangers and the sheer exhilaration of riding together again, through a continent filled with magic and wonder.

Long Description

Cycling an average of 90km a day, often in extreme conditions on badly-maintained gravel and sand roads, being thrown into jail in Equatorial Guinea by aggressive and drunken border police, and facing possible death when taken hostage by drugged Liberian teenage rebels may not be a conventional idea of truly 'living', but, in November 2003, Riaan Manser rode out of Cape Town, determined to become the first person to circumnavigate Africa by bicycle. He thought it would take him a year - it took him over two. At the end of 2005, he cycled back into Cape Town, 14kg lighter and having covered 36 500 km through thirty-four countries. Intending to use his journey to generate local and international awareness of the often appalling standard of living in Africa, Riaan was also propelled by a strong desire for African adventure, a desire that was inevitably fulfilled. While Riaan's journey allowed him to experience some of the greatest generosity and kindness that he had ever encountered, often from the poorest of the poor, his adventures were also often of a more harrowing kind. In Around Africa on my Bicycle, Riaan allows the reader to relive the toil, excitement and occasional terror of his journey - negotiating the Sahara and Libyan deserts, learning French, Portuguese and Arabic, eating monkey, rat and bat, standing in front of the pyramids, being awarded the freedom of the Red Sea in Egypt, feeding hyenas mouth to mouth, and standing on the highest, as well as at the lowest, points in Africa. Riaan arrived safely in Cape Town on 25 November 2005.
