Description

Located on part of the Valkenberg Estate, this restaurant takes its name from the 180 year old fig tree that stands graciously in the beautiful garden setting which surrounds the restaurant and adjoining bar. Affectionately named Annie's Arms, the bar is housed in what was the original barn of the Valkenberg Estate, and has been tastefully renovated in keeping with its heritage. Annie's Arms bar have a very extensive single malt whisky menu and also serve Gluhwein in Winter and frozen margaritas and wild berry daiquiris in Summer. The restaurant embraces country charm and character with Cape reed ceilings and French doors opening onto the tranquil garden. The décor is rustic and unpretentious with earthy Autumn colours creating a warm inviting ambience, whilst a quirky collection of art provides the finishing touches.

Despite being only 10 mins from town, the atmosphere is pure country, with delightful al fresco dining in summer and a roaring log fire in winter! The Wild Fig offers friendly, efficient service and quality cuisine comprising an eclectic mix of Thai, Mediterranean, vegetarian and local flavours. Starter recommendations include the deep-fried camembert, in a light beer batter with fig jelly and melba toast and the duck liver skewers with pickled ginger, sweet Thai chilli sauce and crispy noodles.

The Main Course Menu offers some specialities which you will seldom see in other restaurants such as the tongue served on a herbed mash and baked with a mustard mayonnaise, or the South African inspired roast quail with gooseberry & sage stuffing served with a rooibos tea plum sauce. Don't forget the most popular dish, the slowly roasted Greek lamb, in phyllo pastry with minted yoghurt. Vegetarians are well looked after too with several salad options, pasta choices such as the baby spinach, feta, tomato and garlic combination, or the Mediterranean style roasted bell pepper stuffed with artichokes, baby spinach, feta and couscous. All main course are accompanied by roasted potatoes and seasonal vegetables. If you enjoy a combination of unusual flavours try the roasted chilli honey nut ice cream sandwich for dessert! If you prefer to stick with something a little more traditional, the bread and butter pudding is highly recommended.

Directions
From Main Road Observatory, turn into Station Road. Continue with this road all the way down to Liesbeek Parkway. Cross Liesbeeck Parkway and follow the road as it curves to your right, this is now Observatory Road. At the t-junction turn left and then immediately right into Liesbeeck Avenue. We are at the end of the road.
